Sermon Series: Lessons from Godspell
Godspell is a musical adaptation of the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus Christ recruits a diverse group of eccentric young New Yorkers to learn and enact biblical parables through games, music, and comedy. It's been called a hippie show bringing laughs and lessons to many in the 70’s. For some of us, however, it brought the parables of Jesus to life in more understandable ways than the Bible did. It can't be removed from the context in which it was made in the 60’s and 70’s which is that of teen disenfranchisement, distrust in authority, strong desire for community, searching for higher meaning, and desire for justice/equality for the underprivileged. However, is that not what we as all the generations that have followed are STILL seeking? Belonging, trust, community, justice. Let’s look back to see what we still may learn as we look more closely into the timeless Lessons From Godspell.
